Treasures we hold close to our hearts
In 2021 a group of midwives around NZ came together in unity in response to the Covid 19 vaccination mandate. Like many others, the vaccine mandates brought so much heartache to midwives that were forced to surrender their career and connection with whanau.
The mismanagement of our profession, lack of bodily autonomy & informed consent and the devastating loss of a career, has also brought clarity and authenticity - Mandates do not belong in midwifery.
So, Aku Huia Kaimanawa Midwives Collective was birthed into being - from a place of despair and loss, to a light of new beginnings, choice and freedom.
We are midwives, supporting midwives to have the same rights as the women we care for.
We honour the growth, knowledge and power of women in this space of transition. Respecting informed consent and body sovereignty that is protected by New Zealand law and our midwifery code of ethics.
We do not believe in consent by coercion.
Aku Huia Kaimanawa invite you into a web of support.
Support for women to be the center of their midwifery care.
Support for midwives being invisibilized to have their voices heard.
Support for midwifery students choosing not to vaccinate to navigate the Bachelor of Midwifery programmes available.
We rely on donations to support our purpose.
To stand up for a healthy, positive midwifery profession.
Supporting true informed consent
and upholding human rights for women and midwives in New Zealand.
