Pregnant women are traditionally the last to receive a new pharmaceutical intervention due to rigorous safety standards. The Covid pandemic has unpicked the fabric of this safety blanket. As more information now comes to light, it’s crucial that we re-examine the messaging that pregnant women continue to receive.
Paul Brennan from Reality Check Radio interviewed Aku Huia Kaimanawa Midwives on the mandates and the current state of midwifery in New Zealand.
"The elephant in the room is the nearly 200 NZ midwives stood down in November last year as a result of the Covid 19 Response Act 2020"
(Aku Huia Kaimanawa Midwives Collective, 2022)
From September 27-29th 2022 we came together as a collective of midwives from around the country.
We gathered in the beautiful Coromandel for a purpose, we gathered for a new beginning, the birth of Aku Huia Kaimanawa Midwives Collective.
This exclusive interview shows how damaging vaccine mandates are to not only the midwifery profession,
but on the livelihoods and well-being of our midwives and their own whanau.
The devastation of the vaccine mandates that saw hundreds of midwives lose their career is still impacting the profession today. The sadness and loss that many midwives experienced was raw and real. Never, is there a time when making a decision about your own body, is there only one medicine, one treatment, or one procedure. The entire ethos of midwifery is informed choice and consent, but this was not honoured when we were faced with the vaccine mandates.
